Spring Cleaning for Your Head – Headspace Review
If you’re like me, you have friends who have resolved to clean out some clutter from their homes. I’ve never had much clutter in my home, but I do sometimes suffer from cluttered thinking (Dave hangs his head in shame as he admits to being an overthinker). At the beginning of 2017, I decided to clean out some of my thinking by trying meditation. Many of my friends have sung its praises and I thought it was time for me to try.
My curiosity into mediation was initially piqued when I read “10% Happier” by Dan Harris. In his book, he wrote about how meditation helped him overcome his panic/anxiety attacks (one was broadcast on national TV). To start my own process, I downloaded an app named Headspace (you can find out more here). I recommend it highly, even though I only used the free trial!
The free trial is 10 days and you only have to commit to about 10 minutes per day. I used it 10 days in a row and found myself a little more relaxed and clearer in my thinking in just a couple of days. I felt a little more focused in my thinking and even traffic bothered me less!
The metronomic pace of the narrator’s voice made for a good relaxing environment. His Australian accent helped too (who doesn’t enjoy a little Aussie every now and then?). This is a great way to get started with meditating.
I will admit that once the free trial was over, I found another free app that let me continue my practice. If you’re curious about that app, email me at dgunby@mindimensions.com. I still practice almost every day, and usually for only 10-15 minutes at a time. Even if you don’t use the Headspace app, give meditation a try. Your thinking will be thanking you.
